If you have summer job vacancies to fill, you may want to determine if these will be
highly sought after jobs (good pay, lots of opportunities to learn new skills) or difficult
to fill because of the nature of the work (physically demanding, repetitive tasks, long
hours). Don't assume that posting a job will automatically attract candidates, you have
to make the job offer interesting and apealing.

Why is this important?

It's the law of supply and demand. There are many employers trying to attract a small
pool of qualified candidates. The best candidates will perform at a high level and
offer excellent customer service to the public, which positively affects any organization.
If you want to attract these students to your organization, you need to present the job
you want them to fill in an appealing way. Failure to do so can result in not having
anyone interested in working for you for the summer.

Tips:

1. Start by targeting interests.  What are the cool things about your organization? Why is it a great place to work?
What kinds of new skills can a student learn? What kinds of new experiences will they gain?

2. Be clear on the job duties and expectations of the job but don't simply put a job description or a list of job duties in
the posting. Market to students like you would market to your customer base.

3. If you are having difficulty with your job posting, contact one of  the regional offices of the Department of Post-
Secondary Education Training and Labour . Ask to speak with a SEED Program Officer:
